NEW HAVEN, EU/AP

Americans earned a smaller average income in 2005 than in 2000

From the NYT:
"Americans earned a smaller average income in 2005 than in 2000, the fifth consecutive year that they had to make ends meet with less money than at the peak of the last economic expansion, new government data shows.
While incomes have been on the rise since 2002, the average income in 2005 was $55,238, still nearly 1 percent less than the $55,714 in 2000, after adjusting for inflation, analysis of new tax statistics show.
The combined income of all Americans in 2005 was slightly larger than it was in 2000, but because more people were dividing up the national income pie, the average remained smaller. Total adjusted gross income in 2005 was $7.43 trillion, up 3.1 percent from 2000 and 5.8 percent from 2004.
Total income listed on tax returns grew every year after World War II, with a single one-year exception, until 2001, making the five-year period of lower average incomes and four years of lower total incomes a new experience for the majority of Americans born since 1945. (...)
The growth in total incomes was concentrated among those making more than $1 million. The number of such taxpayers grew by more than 26 percent, to 303,817 in 2005, from 239,685 in 2000.
These individuals, who constitute less than a quarter of 1 percent of all taxpayers, reaped almost 47 percent of the total income gains in 2005, compared with 2000.
People with incomes of more than a million dollars also received 62 percent of the savings from the reduced tax rates on long-term capital gains and dividends that President Bush signed into law in 2003, according to a separate analysis by Citizens for Tax Justice, a group that points out policies that it says favor the rich.
The group’s calculations showed that 28 percent of the investment tax cut savings went to just 11,433 of the 134 million taxpayers, those who made $10 million or more, saving them almost $1.9 million each. Over all, this small number of wealthy Americans saved $21.7 billion in taxes on their investment income as a result of the tax-cut law.
The nearly 90 percent of Americans who make less than $100,000 a year saved on average $318 each on their investments. They collected 5.3 percent of the total savings from reduced tax rates on investment income.
The I.R.S. data showed that the number of Americans making less than $25,000 a year shrank, down by 3.2 million, or 5.5 percent.
Nearly half of Americans reported incomes of less than $30,000, and two-thirds make less than $50,000.
The number of taxpayers making more than $100,000 grew by nearly 3.4 million and accounted for more than two-thirds of the growth in the number of returns filed in 2005 compared with those in 2000.
The fact that average incomes remained lower in 2005 than five years earlier helps explain why so many Americans report feeling economic stress despite overall growth in the economy. Many Americans are also paying a larger share of their health care costs and have had their retirement benefits reduced, adding to their out-of-pocket costs."
I'll say. And the fact that those average incomes have not surpassed their 2000 levels even though they include the relatively small number of very rich people whose incomes have risen considerably explains even more about why the rest of us don't feel so great about the economy.
And these figures, of course, do not take into account the current problems in the housing market and the economy more generally.

COSAS QUE PUEDES HACER CON UN CELULAR

SECOND... Have you locked your keys in the car?

Does your car have remote keyless entry?
This may come in handysomeday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in thecar and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cellphone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from yourcar door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock.
Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is noobject. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reachsomeone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock thedoors (or the trunk).
Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our carover a cell phone!"

10 TIPS PARA REDUCIR EL stress.

34. Talk it out. Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can help clear your mind of confusion so you can concentrate on problem solvinG.

36. Learn to live one day at a time.

37. Every day, do something you really enjoy.

38. Add an ounce of love to everything you do.

39. Take a hot bath or shower (or a cool one in summertime) to relieve tension.
40. Do something for somebody else.

41. Do something that will improve your appearance. Looking better can help you feel better.

42. Schedule a realistic day. Avoid the tendency to schedule back-to-back appointments; allow time between appointments for a breathing spell.

43. Become more flexible. Some things are worth not doing perfectly and some issues are well to compromise upon.

44. Eliminate destructive self-talk: "I'm too old to..." "I'm too fat to..." etc.

46. Take care of the todays as best you can and the yesterdays and the tomorrows will take care of themselves.

47. Do one thing at a time. When you are with someone, be with that person and with no one or nothing else. When you are busy with a project, concentrate on doing that project and forget about everything else you have to do.

48. Allow yourself time -- everyday -- for privacy, quiet, and introspection.
49. Do unpleasant tasks first. If an especially unpleasant task faces you, do it early in the day and get it over with; then the rest of your day will be free of anxiety.

50. Learn to delegate responsibility to capable others.

51. Count to 1,000. Forget about counting to 10. Count to 1,000 before doing something or saying anything that could make matters worse.

52. Think optimistically. Believe that most people are doing the best they can.

QUIERES SABER QUE ES UN TORNADO COSMICO?

Maná - Justicia, Tierra y Libertad

Tonight’s featured song is “Justicia, Tierra y Libertad” by Mana, a song Rick and two of his legislative colleagues, Joe E. Moreno and Jessica Farrar, used to always listen to while driving from Houston to Austin to try to deal with Tom DeLay’s shenanigans around the Texas redistricting session.
“While I was in Afghanistan Joe died in an auto accident. I was like losing a best friend and a brother but I was in a combat zone and couldn’t get back to bury him. This was the song we shared.”

rezas y rezas y nada enderezas
por eso hagamos la revolucion, de amor
Oye

Estamos exigiendo todo el respeto
respeto al indio y a su dignidad
ya lo dijo Villa, dijo Zapata

10 TIPS PARA REDUCIR EL " stress"

22. Unplug your phone. Want to take a long bath, meditate, sleep, or read without interruption? Drum up the courage to temporarily disconnect. (The possibility of there being a terrible emergency in the next hour or so is almost nil.) Or use an answering machine.

23. Simplify, simplify, simplify?

24. Make friends with nonworriers. Nothing can get you into the habit of worrying faster than associating with chronic worrywarts.

25. Get up and stretch periodically if your job requires that you sit for extended periods.

26. Wear earplugs. If you need to find quiet at home, pop in some earplugs.

27. Get enough sleep. If necessary, use an alarm clock to remind you to go to bed.

28. Create order out of chaos. Organize your home and workspace so that you always know exactly where things are. Put things away where they belong and you won?t have to go through the stress of losing things.

29. When feeling stressed, breathe deeply - most people tend to breathe in short, shallow breaths. When you breathe like this, stale air is not expelled, oxidation of the tissues is incomplete, and muscle tension frequently results. Check your breathing throughout the day, and before, during, and after high-pressure situations. If you find your stomach muscles are knotted and your breathing is shallow, relax all your muscles and take several deep, slow breaths. Note how, when you're relaxed, both your abdomen and chest expand when you breathe.

30. Writing your thoughts and feelings down (in a journal, or on paper to be thrown away) can help you clarify things and can give you a renewed perspective.

31. Try the following yoga technique whenever you feel the need to relax. Inhale deeply through you nose to the count of eight. Then, with lips puckered, exhale very slowly through your mouth to the count of 16, or for as long as you can. Concentrate on the long sighing sound and feel the tension dissolve. Repeat 10 times.

32. Inoculate yourself against a feared event. Example: before speaking in public, take time to go over every part of the experience in your mind. Imagine what you'll wear, what the audience will look like, how you will present your talk, what the questions will be and how you will answer them, etc. Visualize the experience the way you would have it be. You'll likely find that when the time comes to make the actual presentation, it will be "old hat" and much of your anxiety will have fled.
